2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1/4 cup sugar
1 envelope of active dry yeast
Mix ingredients together in a glass or plastic container and let stand overnight in warm place, covered loosely. Refrigerate, covered and be sure to stir each day. "Herman" must be fed every day 5 to 7 days. This is what you feed him: 1 cup flour, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup sugar. You must bake bread every week or give 1 cup of starter away each week.
To Bake Bread:
In large bowl make batter of 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 cup corn oil, 1 TBSP salt, 1 cup starter, 1-1/2 cups warm water, 6 cups flour (makes 3 breads). Grease sides of bowl, let rise overnight, out of refrigerator, covered lightly. Divide dough into 3 parts and knead a few times on floured board. Put each loaf into greased loaf pan and brush with oil. Let rise 4-5 hours. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
